Works in the show explore the inner and outer realms of the Animal Kingdom and how we as humans interpret and relate to our Earthly cohabitants. Depictions of devious creatures, playful companions, and kindred spirits in animal form can be found throughout this concise collection by notable artists: Scott Ackerman (Kingston, NY), Steph Becker (KCMO), Rich Cali (Kingston, NY), and Janel Schultz (Brooklyn, NY). Spirit Animals is the first of an ongoing series of seasonally rotated exhibitions curated by Calico at Small Talk. The opening of this exhibit coincides with Upstate Art Weekend, a multi-county long-weekend event (July 18-21) highlighting the vibrant art scene north of NYC. 

Calico is an exhibition platform founded in 2012 by artist / organizer and Woodstock resident, Scott Chasse. Originally a brick-and-mortar gallery space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Calico now focuses on location-based exhibits, installations, and experiences within and beyond the gallery sphere. 

Small Talk is a rustic cocktail bar in the heart of downtown Woodstock. The main bar is a thoughtfully designed space featuring colors and textures inspired by the surrounding outdoors. Upstairs is an annex space with seasonally rotated exhibitions presented by Calico.
